Summary

Waterbury Health seeks a Chair of Surgery with exceptional leadership skills and commitment to clinical excellence who is responsible for the overall direction and supervision of all clinical activities and services for the Department of Surgery. Reports to Chief Medical Officer.

Some Responsibilities Include:

 

*Oversee the quality of professional services/activities by licensed individuals with clinical privileges within the department. Develop, monitor, and implement programs, which measure and evaluate patient care, clinical practice, credentials and privileges review, medical education, and utilization review.

*Provide department leadership and direction in collaboration with other health care providers. Plans and establishes department goals and reports on programs. Review, update and enforce policies and procedures.

*Responsible for insuring qualifications and competency of all staff. Oversee employment process and continual education and upgrading of skills for all personnel in the department. Maintain continuing review of professional performance of all practitioners with clinical privileges and other professionals within department.

*Provide direct surgical care to patients to assure ongoing competency and credibility as a General Surgeon.

*Conducts administrative functions of department including budgeting process, and department policies and procedures in matters affecting patient care in cooperation with Nursing Services and hospital administration.

*Provide appropriate guidance and recommendations for physical and programmatic changes in scope of services for development of new programs, acquisition of new equipment and expansion of services.

*Establish, oversee, and evaluate ongoing quality assessment and improvement activities for patient care services in the department.

*Provide support and monitor performance of continuing education teaching programs for established residency, fellowships, or student programs.

*Assist in preparation of Annual Reports and required records

*Serve as hospital liaison with affiliated institutions and professional organizations.

*Participate in appropriate department and hospital-wide committees.

*Coordinate department activities with those of other hospital departments. Update Board, Administration and Nursing on issues affecting department.

*Participate in hospital clinical research

 

Advise administration regarding surgeon supply to meet community and hospital needs. Assist in recruitment and retention of surgeons as needed for academic faculty as well as private practice

Leadership role in conjunction with the Elected Chief of Surgery in performing physician credentialing, recredentialling, and disciplinary action as needed for all surgeons within the purview of the Department of Surgery. Assist the Hospital in meeting or exceeding all regulatory standards.

Oversight of the OR including supervision of the cardiac and robotic surgical APPs.  Along with serving on hospital committees.
